The Wascana Chimes
were originally located in the bell tower of Holy
Trinity Church
in Milestone, Saskatchewan.
The chimes were first dedicated on Easter Sunday, April 4, 1920 as the
"War Memorial Bells" in memory of those who volunteered for service
in World War I. Upon the disposition of the building, the Parish of the Good
Shepherd, Avonlea-Ogema, donated the chimes and the dedication plaque to Regina's Wascana Centre
Authority for installation within the southwest
tower of Wascana Place. The Wascana Chimes were
rededicated April 1, 1987. The pageantry included greetings from
His Worship Mayor Larry Schneider and Dr. Lloyd Barber from University of Regina. Wayne Tunison, long-time member
of the Regina Bell Ringers, performed the dedication concert.
Dr. Thomas Schudel, Professor of Music at the University of Regina,
Saskatchewan, was commissioned to compose the Wascana Chimes Dedication
Piece and the Wascana Clock Chimes. The Chimes ring out every
fifteen minutes from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. with Dr. Schudel's Wascana
Clock Chimes, when the
Chimes are played by computer control.
The Regina Bell Ringers perform concerts every Sunday
afternoon during the summer months. Each concert is two hours long featuring
well-known music and music written specifically for the Wascana Chimes by the
ringers.
